THE USUI SYSTEM OF NATURAL HEALING
(USUI SHIKI RYOHO)
WHAT IS REIKI?
Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a Japanese, non-invasive, non-manipulative technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing.
The word comes from two Japanese words – Rei and Ki. “Rei” means universal or spiritual consciousness. “Ki” means (same as Chi in Chinese) vital life force, therefore the combined term is defined as “spiritually guided vital life force”
Reiki is hands-on energy healing where the practitioner serves as an open channel for transmitting the “ki” to others. The energy is channeled through the hands to the client, which activates the body’s own natural ability to heal itself. Reiki goes to wherever it is needed most, releasing blocked energies, cleansing the body of toxins, working to create a state of balance and harmony and promoting relaxation and healing.
Light touch is used on or above the client’s fully clothed body. Shoes can be removed for added comfort.
WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF REIKI?
Reiki’s tradition and history is oral and generally passed from Reiki Master to student during training, therefore, you may experience some differences in dates/times. Some of the writings tell the story of how Dr. Mikao Usui, a Japanese Christian educator, discovered the ancient healing art in Japan in the late 1800’s. His revelations paved the way for Reiki’s emergence in the United States and the rest of the world.
Based on ancient Buddhist and Hindu teachings, Dr. Usui evolved a system of healing through study, research and meditation. He practiced and taught this method using the laying on of hands. In the traditional Reiki lineage, he trained Chujiri Hayashi to continue his work after his death. Dr. Hayashi then opened a clinic and school in Tokyo where he trained his successor, Mrs. Hawayo Takata, who brought Reiki to the mainland of the U.S.
Between 1945 and 1970, Mrs. Takata was the only living Reiki Master in the world. Between 1970 and 1980, she trained over twenty (20) Reiki Masters. Mrs. Takata’s granddaughter, Phyllis Lei Furumoto, is the current Grand Master of the Usui System of Natural Healing (Usui Shiki Ryoho).
HOW DOES REIKI WORK?
The Reiki ability is transferred to the student by a Reiki Master during an attunement process. During this process, the “spiritual/universal consciousness” (rei) makes adjustments in the student’s chakras and energy pathways to accommodate the ability to channel the Reiki and link the student to the Reiki source. The Reiki Master does not direct the process but is simply a channel for the attunement energy flowing from a higher power (the spiritual universe).
Once you have received a Reiki attunement, you will have it for the remainder of your life. It does not wear off and you can never lose it.
One attunement per Reiki Level is all that is necessary to activate the ability to channel Reiki. The benefits of attunement include refinement of the Reiki energy that you channel, increased strength of the energy, healing of personal problems, clarity of mind, increased psychic sensitivity and a raised level of consciousness.
After the attunement, all that is necessary for practitioners to use Reiki is to place their hands on or above the person to be healed with the intention of healing. The Reiki energies will begin to flow automatically. Reiki knows where to go and what to do. It will communicate with the client’s higher self. The best results are achieved by simply remaining calm and relaxed while enjoying the soothing energies that are flowing through you.
Reiki can never harm anyone. It is always benevolent. It never depletes your energy. Because of this, giving a treatment always increases one’s energy and leaves one surrounded with loving feelings of well-being.
